Making Monsters Album Launch

On the full moon with bonfire skies, 3rd November 2017. The Black Market Venue hosted Star Botherers and Strange Currencies ‘Making Monsters’ Album Launches. Sharing the stage with Black Thorn’s sound of new wave folk rave and an intense soundcheck and red wine over bass guitar spillage incident, with unbearable faint inducing stage lighting heat they battled and blasted out their songs that had also achieved some good radio play! Check them out. http://www.blackthornofficial.co.uk/

The folkesque and witty Star Botherers https://m.facebook.com/Star-Botherers-467251663336312/?locale2=en_GB with their album launch. Andrew ‘Bart’ Hawkins stormed their set with songs such as ‘When Dave’s Dead’ a beauty of a track and ode to bassist with this ‘found in loft funky wah wah pedal.’ Dave ‘Aldo’ Drury. Weathering the storm of ‘cheap string’ snapping, whilst enjoying Stones and pale ale. We had shared the stage with them at Deerstock 2017.
Opportunity knocked, so big thanks for sharing both stages and album launches. Bob the sound engineer – cheers too! With a great crown to boot. A great night of sweat, mandolins, banter and booze was had.

On to Strange Currencies. In Your World, Gypsy Disco, Maddening Skies, Slow Train, Razor Face, Automatic, Mrs Slocombe’s Pussy, I’m Free and Prosecco captures the audience. With a hot of the press batch of CD’s that arrived that morning.

Being the non human, non metronome watch the slightly faster ‘Gypsy Disco’

Then inspired by Are You Being Served. The Blues, jamming, wang wanging, Mrs Slocombe’s Pussy

For what we were about to perform. The mother of F.. C…U…Kers always make me truly grateful of true musical talent that I’m privy to perform alongside. The hand that bangs and jams, the flock that rocks. Stars collided in perfect matrimony and the force was with us all tonight tile a tractor beam of bliss. PP Johnson frontman extraordinaire has especially treated himself to a Rick and Morty t-shirt and performed a gritty belting set. Bassist Steve Canner impressed with his ever expanding collecting of bass pedals and funky riffs. Our lovely talented Andrew Death on guitar floated my boat with top notch solo’s and riffing with the best of ‘em. The fantastic Robert ‘Too Tall’ Batchelor wowed with his belly belt of harmonicas. With only a slight bass drum pedal malfunction drama for myself, frantically trying to communicate that drama to Ange, band manager, who though I shouted ‘film this one’ during ‘Maddening Skies!’ So began filming. AAAARRGH. My shouting was drowned out, but I had faith and we all survived the song intact. It’s kind of like driving with your foot off the pedals on drums. A little bit disturbing.

Razor Face

We will be in studio recording our new EP. Then spend time working on new material for 2018.

Weebles, Wine & Words

To swear on air. That was a bloody good ‘straight after work’ vocals recording sesh. After leaving to breathe… The McGuigan coated throats just enough for a velvet vintage performance. Now for Rugby & Pizza with Wifey. Well done Mr Paul Phillip Johnson.

With a pretty great music ‘information gathering’ week in the bag.  Networking a go go. We all feel a refreshed reiteration on how to move the music of Strange Currencies into the universe a little better. With a Nusic Academy Q&A hosted by Mark Del at Nottingham Trent Student Union. Featuring on the panel John Kennedy from Radio X, Kate Holder, Producer for Huw Stephens for the BBC, Eleanor Goodman, currently features Editor at Metal Hammer from and Jamz Supernova from BBC Radio 1Xtra. Being a musician and not a savvy Radio Plugger, promoter. Well not yet… In this day and age. Listening to some valuable tips via iTunes podcasts on the bus to work has been enlightening. Some things are obvious. Some are ‘Aha’ moments. Some are well ‘why do that as I would not..?’ But play guitar with the suggested chord formations. You might just have a tune. With stalls, advice and networking with local promoters I’m Not From London. It was a productive meet and greet.

One of the funniest moments from the Nusic sesh involved as question about visual media eg band photos. Eleanor Goodmans sound advice.. Don’t do photos of bands in front of walls or forests. As its ‘soooooo very unoriginal’ had us laughing out loud. You had to be there!  ‘Wanky Cocks’ against depressing backdrops in a nutshell. Its quite possibly 50 shades of grey with arrogance and unoriginality.

A few pre mastered CD promos featuring a few songs were handed out.  Some more seed planted from out underground greenhouse.

After finding Bridget Jones’s Baby funnier than expected. Pissing at the one liner “It’s a big wanking bomb Viv” in No Offence,  a heart stopping episode of The Walking Dead, season 7 this week. When we thought Rick Grimes was zombie pate. Some really weird dreams followed by milking squids.  The question begs… Is it better to gain musical success from your own talent and creating what you love. Thank pulling in favours in Whoreland?

Then at the weekend… a band injury.. I’m recovering with a sore upper bingo wing, being burned by an oven tray full of bacon, I’m still not sure how i managed it at that angle. Maybe….(for album pre release publicity) A unicorn self combusted its horn. Then decided to compete in the winter Olympics while applying lippy. Bought a Moped and then travelled Thelma and Louise style to Balmoral. Later recording an album likened to ‘Rumours.’ Shagged a pony. Had an affair with and antelope. Found an ice pop. Snorted Kryptonite. Went on a cruise with Jane McDonald, burst into song, with a distinct blurred lens. Then trained as a butcher, opened a shop. Decided to become vegan. Discovered that vegetables have feelings too. Went batshit crazy apeshit. Read up on mind control and possession. Did a bit of hocus pocus. Found out the Reptilians wanted to recruit. Found me and did this in the night. Ok ED and James. Your beautiful oh little scar scar.

Recording the album ‘Making Monsters’

It was PP Johnson lead vocals and Claudine West backing vocals of something very beautiful for the album tonight. Take this one to your church. This girl is understanding.

Album is coming together pretty good. It eclectic! Grunge, country, ballad, Blues, Dance, Pop and more.

So as we depart into the weekend between the day jobs. We are happy. Excited and content and a little tipsy. Rehearsals with the full band commence next week. Good times for Strange Currencies. Great year ahead.

Be the best you can be 😉

American Saviour

This is not just an ADVENTURE…. It’s a HAPPENING….It’s a NEW WORLD ORDER EVENT!

Strange Currencies single, released on digital stores December 3rd 2016.

We hear the roar of fans… Hellaujahyeah! This is a funky monster of a record that will have you singing along to the chorus like a beastie in the bushes with a lollipop in one hand and a toupee in the other.Turn it up in your vehicle, your cans, your in ears to harass neighbours, at BBQ s and dance like you’re a shivering kangaroo on a cake walk in a hurricane. Or even…..

“Jump on board let’s ride the pony, one by one go marching in.”

With a pledge. It begins. “Ride the Pony” make a promise… kick it off with a walrus howl, a banjo riff and an comb-over quiff. Hell unleashes a war of woo hoo’s.

We had oodles of fun making this. The music was originally a concept, then a mess about idea involving body movements I cannot possibly discuss as you had to be there, for a bit of fun. Through the rejected orphans come the serial killers and trending chillers that break on through to the other side. With no direct reference to ‘My Little Pony.’ You never know it may appear with Rick Astley on ‘Now 100!’

So the challenge to recreate as a duo live with the aid of a loop pedal a plectrum and no cheating….  We wish ourselves luck and sober rehearsals. Enjoy.

American Saviour

Pick up the pen

And make your mark

Just know that I’ve had your back

Since from the start

Don’t you go looking too hard

For the small print

Because this gift to the world

Is heaven sent

Is heaven sent

It’s heaven…sent

Jump on-board let’s ride the pony

One by one go marching in

Don’t forget to pray to heaven

Tell me what’s my line again

This is the charge

Answer the call

Here’s comes the action man to save us all

A mighty wind of change

Blows up the storm

But if I say the wrong thing

Deny it all

Deny it all

Deny it…all

Jump on-board let’s ride the pony

One by one go marching in

Don’t forget to pray to heaven

Tell me what’s my line again

Oh can you see

What’s oh so clear

That this here land of the free

Is drenched in fear

But if you give me the chance

I’ll keep you safe

The only game in town

Come pledge your faith

Come pledge your faith

Come place your…faith

Jump on-board let’s ride the pony

One by one go marching in

Don’t forget to pray to heaven

Tell me what’s my line again

Jump on-board let’s ride the pony

One by one go marching in

Don’t forget to pray to heaven

Tell me what’s my line again

I am a shining star

I can touch what I want

Strange Currencies EP : Strange Currencies

Unwrap Strange Currencies…The sonorous superb vocals of PP Johnson. With an eclectic acoustic foundation, this is rock music for the soul. The multi instrumentation of Claudine West emits rhythmical eloquence with alternative undertones. Lyrical diversity walks between parallel lines of the hauntingly uplifting. With gems such as ‘The Last Refuge.’ This creative duo radiate powerful live performances, which are stripped down to the bone, invoking a zephyr that turns a hurricane.

strangecu press release 2016

Described as ‘SUBLIME’ by Filthy’s, Nottingham.

Formed in April 2016, Nottingham duo Strange Currencies began writing and recording their eponymous debut EP and their 2017 debut album ‘Making Monsters.’

Featuring the powerful raw vocals of PP Johnson (No Empire, Subway Circus) and multi-instrumentalist Claudine West (The Idolins, Subway Circus)

They began performing at local open mic nights to promote their music and have thus far worked with local promoters such as ‘Bad Time For Bonzo’ and ‘I’m Not From London.’

They describe their eureka moment as an eclectic style they call ROCKUSTIC: fusing such styles as Rock, Country and Folk (to name but a few). Influenced by The Who, The Doors, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Bobby Womack, Foo Fighters, Tori Amos, Black Sabbath, Jose Gonzalez and Suzanne Vega and R.E.M. (with the band name taken from the R.E.M. song).

Strange Currencies EP Track Listing

  1. I Don’t Dance

A catchy acoustic funky track about today’s drinking culture. Intoxication being the only way to willingly get on the dance floor (for people of a certain age). Featuring guest harmonica by Robert ‘Too Tall’ Batchelor, whom the pair met on a live mic night at The Doghouse in Carlton, Nottingham.

  1. The Last Refuge

They say prayer is the last refuge of the scoundrel. This haunting acoustic track tells of a drug addict who, while overdosing, turns to god in their final moments.

  1. Razor Face

The mandolin accompanies this tale of the end of a long and failing relationship.

“ ‘Cause you and I are lost to the circus

You’re chasing pictures of bumper cars

And I know it’s your space not mine

I’m just making up the numbers

And if you think I’m out of line

Then I’m happy to let you”
